When a horse goes into that stable, it gets every opportunity to reach its full potential.

And of course, this particular colt has an extra layer of interest. He’s by Hitotsu — the brilliant Classic colt trained by Ciaron Maher himself.

 In the spring of 2021, Hitotsu won the Group 1 VRC Derby. He then returned in the autumn and did something extraordinary. First-up, he won the Group 1 Australian Guineas over 1600m, before stepping up to 2400m at his very next start to win the Group 1 ATC Australian Derby. Three consecutive Group 1 victories.

At the March Magic Millions Sale, among all the more obvious commercial types, we identified this slightly unassuming colt who moved like a young staying horse in the making. He may not have been the flashiest yearling on the complex, but he had the things we like to see. He covered the ground well. He was uncomplicated. He had a good action. He looked like a horse with a future, rather than one simply prepared to win a beauty parade. He was offered on behalf of powerhouse nursery Arrowfield Stud, the same operation that stands Hitotsu. Arrowfield is one of the great names in Australian breeding, and this colt has been raised on some of the finest thoroughbred pasture in the country.

The colt is bred to stay. His dam, Angelical, was a five-time winner from 1350m to 1750m, and this colt is her first foal. There is further staying depth in the family through horses such as Text’n Hurley, Call Me Shamus and Excited Angel, all of which gives us confidence that we are dealing with a horse who should appreciate getting over ground as he matures. Our preferred pedigree matrix, G1 Goldmine, returns a 20/20 match and suggests an optimum trip of around 2000m.

He has thrived since the sale and is already well on his way to being fully broken. Our breaker loves him but judge for yourself by viewing the attached footage of him under saddle.
