Race this Ocean Park Filly
When we cross the Tasman in search of our next superstars, by and large we’re looking for Oaks and Derby prospects. New Zealand has an unquestionable reputation of success when it comes to our premier staying races, more specifically our 3yo Classics. In recent years Ocean Park has been a big part of that success, producing young horses that can show a turn of foot, then extend out to a staying trip as required. In purchasing this lovely filly from the famed Waikato Stud, we believe we’ve found just that – a filly that will be capable of winning races at 1400m before extending out to an Oaks trip later in her 3yo season.
Ocean Park’s success as a stallion speaks for itself. Notable stakes-winning progeny include Tofane, Kolding, Kovalica, Oceanex, Fabric and High Emocean to name but a few. Our filly is out of a Savabeel mare, making her the same cross as recent G1 VRC Oaks placegetter Hurry Curry, amongst others. While pedigree wise it’s a good cross, Ocean Park is a good stallion and Savabeel is a good broodmare sire, physically this filly was a standout.
Ocean Park’s progeny aren’t necessarily ‘sales’ type horses in that they aren’t big and strong and flashy. They tend to be a bit long across the back, a bit short from hit to tail and generally have that look of needing a bit of time. This filly probably has a bit more Savabeel about her, in the sense she has a bit more substance to her and has a bit more power behind the saddle. She looks great standing still but even better on the move where she uses herself beautifully. She looks every but a nice filly in the making and were thrilled to have her.
