Russian Camelot / Cassidy C 24

The Australian stayer is a fascinating prospect. For years, the bloodstock industry in Australia has held its focus on fast, precocious individuals who can land the big stallion-making prizes. However, the country is best known around the world for the Race That Stops The Nation – The Melbourne Cup. Over the years, the European and New Zealand-bred horses have repeatedly won the big race. However, the last two renewals have been won by Aussie bred and trained horses. Maybe the Europeans and Kiwis are busy trying to breed their own sprinters instead. Maybe the Australians have embraced the stayers and a new dawn is rising on the Melbourne Cup.

Ed has placed his faith in Australian breeders and decided that a stayer would be a great deal of fun for a syndicate. Often, people buy sharp two-year-olds to syndicate as there is fast gratification. A stayer is more of a slow build, developing strength and stamina over time with big race targets in mind. Stayers give you the big cups and the stories, built over many seasons. Grey stayers also seem to develop a cult following. Everyone wants to draw the grey Cup horse in the sweepstake. Of the millions who tune in to watch on that first Tuesday in November, the majority will put their $2 on ‘the grey one’ rather than ‘number 6’. All our stayer needs now is a great name to draw in the crowds!

There are no guarantees in racing and Troy has drilled that deep into Ed’s consciousness. He has every reason to think his grey colt could reach the Melbourne Cup, but the truth is, we just don’t know. What Ed, Troy and the whole Malua team can be confident in is the fun of it all. Owner updates are honest and will often bring a big smile to your face. We want our owners involved and informed, but also to be part of our team. We take our horses seriously, but what is life without a sense of humour? Ed wants people involved with his horse who want to be entertained on the journey and share in all the highs and lows that may come along. We can see the evidence that this horse is well-bought. He has a good page, with plenty of top-class staying relations. He’s a gorgeous individual too, with all the right bits in the right places. What’s more important, though, is that he fits the profile; he’ll bring together the community of owners and we’ll build his story.

If you’d like to be a part of that story, you ought to get in touch quickly. He’s already proving very popular, so he won’t be around for too long!
