Toronado x Alyssum Colt

SIRE: TORONADO (IRE)

One of Australia’s most popular stallions - and with reason as he just keeps popping up with quality winners - Swettenham Stud’s TORONADO (IRE) does a particularly good job in this part of the world.

His southern hemisphere winners-to-runners strike rate is an excellent 70% and he has been well represented by 29 stakes winners bred locally - and another 17 overseas.

Six of his sons and daughters are Gr.1 winners with all of but one of those racing or being bred in Australia… Masked Crusader, Mariamia, Bois D’Argent, Shelby Sixtysix and Victor The Winner (Hong Kong) doing a great job in the best of company.

With progeny earnings in excess of $120 million, TORONADO (IRE) has also had stakes winners in New Zealand, England, Ireland, France, Germany, UAE, America and Turkey.

Whilst his Gr.1 winners have been sprinter/milers, TORONADO (IRE) has been able to sire horses capable over a variety of distances and they are known for their great temperaments, their soundness and their ability to train and race on.

A son of the outstanding racehorse and stallion High Chaparral, TORONADO (IRE) was a high class racehorse - the winner of half of his 12 starts. He won the Gr.1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot and was competitive with the best horses of his time - such as Kingman, Dawn Approach, Night Of Thunder and Charm Spirit.

DAM: ALYSSUM (AUS)

An unraced daughter of the ten time NZ Champion Sire Savabeel (noting that all four of TORONADO (IRE)’s runners out of his daughters are winners), ALYSSUM (AUS) is owned by Gerry Harvey who bred this colt - and who has since sent her to So You Think and I Am Invincible.

Following on from his wonderful career at stud, Savabeel is really doing the job as a broodmare sire with his daughters already producing 38 stakes winners including the Gr.1 horses Savatoxl, Beauty Eternal, Gringotts, Warmonger, Autumn Boy, Icebath and Never Been Kissed.

SECOND DAM: ROYAL DESCENT

Still at stud - last year served by Maurice after foaling a TORONADO (IRE) colt (a ¾ brother to his fellow), Royal Descent was high class on the track - during her 31 start career amassing over $2.7 million in stakes.

The winner of her first two starts at three, she quickly rose through the grades - finishing close up in Group races over 1400m and 1600m before a dominant victory in the Gr.3 Adrian Knox Stakes over 2000m.

On the back of that 2¾ length success she was amongst the main fancies in the Gr.1 ATC Oaks and she didn’t just beat her rivals - she annihilated them, racing clear by a stunning ten lengths from the VRC Oaks winner Dear Demi.

“She’s gone beyond all expectations with what she did,” jockey Nash Rawiller said on the day whilst trainer Chris Waller described her performance as “magic.”

Continuing to prove competitive at the highest level, Royal Descent also won the Gr.2 Warwick Stakes at weight-for-age and she was in the placings in Gr.1 company behind such outstanding horses as Preferment, Kermadec, Sacred Falls, Criterion and Streama.

And she had some good ones behind her, in Gr.1 races beating home the likes of Dissident, Fawkner, Sincero, Shoot Out, Silent Achiever, Lucia Valentina, My Kingdom Of Fife, Green Moon, Boban, Happy Trails, Shooting To Win, Protectionist, Adelaide, Gust Of Wind, Hartnell and Rising Romance.

THIRD DAM: MULAN PRINCESS

Royal Descent is one of the six winners produced by the classy mare Mulan Princess, winner of six races including the Gr.2 Hill Stakes and three Listed contests.

Also dam of the multiple city winner The Warrior Woman, Mulan Princess is the grandam of the Gr.3 winner Ho Ho Khan and the Listed winners Solidify and East Asia.

Successful from 1200m to 1900m, the versatile Mulan Princess hails from an outstanding Australasian family - her Gr.3 winning dam Madam Valeta also producing the four time Group winning stallion Falkirk and the Listed winner Luscilla.

Mulan Princess is a ¾ sister to another topliner in Golden Sword, winner of eight of his 22 starts including two Gr.1 handicaps - the Epsom and the Toorak.

Balmoral Keep, Fox Hall, Greta Hall and Angelic Miss are also amongst the stakes winners produced by this family and further back there are the Gr.1 winners Analight, Bellota, Rocket Racer, Starzaan, Miss Margaret and Lord Reims.

PEDIGREE ANALYSIS

This handsome colt is bred on the same TORONADO (IRE)/Zabeel cross as the stakes winners Shesallshenanigans, Twain’s Angel, Shelby Cobra and Beltoro.

TORONADO (IRE)’s high achieving sire High Chaparral is a son of the legendary Sadler’s Wells who has always combined exceptionally well with strains of his ¾ brother Nureyev - the dam sire of Zabeel.

The result here is a 5 X 6 cross of the wonderful matriarch Special.

TORONADO (IRE) also fares well (the stakes winners Snow Mercy, Papillon Club, Lady Jones, Romantic Choice and The Intimidator) with strains of Royal Descent’s star sire Redoute’s Choice whose influential fourth dam Best In Show (one of the great modern day line-breeding subjects) is the grandam of El Gran Senor, dam sire of TORONADO (IRE)’s dam sire Grand Slam.

As a bonus, adding genetic strength, ALYSSUM (AUS) is line-bred to Nijinsky - also carrying a strain of that great horse’s ¾ brother The Minstrel - noting that they are members of the same prolific Torpenhow family that produced Best In Show.

Another outstanding mare in Boudoir also makes her presence felt in this colt’s pedigree - via Graustark in TORONADO (IRE) whilst ALYSSUM (AUS) has that stallion’s full brother His Majesty (the terrific mare Flower Bowl duplicated) and his relation Heir Apparent II.

Also nice in the background are duplications of the excellent mares Sweet Lavender, Aloe, Selene, Lady Susan, Tara and Frizette.
